New Report shows Oregon schools falling behind: Over the course of the last two decades investment in Oregon’s public schools has declined to a point where independent rankings place Oregon schools near the bottom in the nation for school funding. Measure 97:  Portland Council PTA supports Measure 97. Measure 97 increases the corporate minimum tax for the largest corporations doing business in Oregon — C Corporations with more than $25 million in Oregon sales. The revenue raised by this new tax structure will bring much needed funding to education in Oregon, as well as provide resources to healthcare and senior services in our state.  You can read more about Measure 97 here.

Children's Book Harvest: ​It’s nearly time to launch the 4th Annual Children’s Book Harvest.  Last year the Children's Book Bank collected books from schools and businesses around Portland in an annual book drive and were able to give 35,000 books to nearly 4,800 children in Portland Public Schools! This year the Children’s Book Harvest will run from 10/3 through 11/10.​​​​​Have you enrolled your PTA in the 2016 Children's Book Harvest yet?Find more information about the program and how to enroll here.

Family Engagement: Are we engaging every family like we should? Dr. Steve Constantino has a great presentation on Family Engagement HERE. 

Opportunities: Leaders and community members, do you know someone who wants a new career helping kids? First Student is looking for new drivers! There is another plus- If a PTA successfully recruits a school bus driver and the driver completes the training course and 90 working days, then First Student will write a check for $500 to your school. National PTA and Education News:

  • National PTA Commends House Passage of Supporting Youth Opportunity and Preventing Delinquency Act​​: The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Supporting Youth Opportunity and Preventing Delinquency Act, which would reauthorize the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA) and strengthen the nation’s juvenile justice system.   • National PTA and Mountain America Credit Union Team Up to Help Families Achieve Their Financial Dreams- National PTA is pleased to announce that Mountain America Credit Union has become the association’s newest Member Benefit Provider. Through the alliance, all PTA members can join Mountain America Credit Union. The credit union is also offering PTA members and PTAs a cash incentive when they open an account. Read more HERE.

Student Aid Fund

Portland Council operates the Student Aid Fund to assist Portland Public School students with eyeglasses, shoes and other clothing items that cannot be found at the Clothing Center.     

PTA leaders, please remember to update your Officer List with Oregon PTA so that important news and events can be communicated throughout the year.

Want to keep abreast with  the issues that affect your children, school and education?  Here you will learn what your PTA can do in an election year, be informed about advocacy events and read about legislative updates.

Clothing Center

Portland Council operates the PTA Clothing Center to assist students at Portland Public Schools with clothing needs.  Over 2000 students were served last school year.  All work is performed by volunteers and with generous donor assistance.
